Personal Statement

In high school, my friends were all going to a youth group called K-Life. I didn't know what it was but since my friends were going, I decided it might be fun. At K-Life I started to learn about the Bible and Jesus. After a few months, I decided that I should read the New Testament. Not long after, I sat on my bed and accepted Jesus as my personal Savior and told Him that I was a sinner in need of the salvation that only Jesus offers and that I believe that He is the Son of God. In so many ways, that is when my life began.

Following my acceptance of Jesus, I volunteered as a Young Life leader and also as a K-Life leader. I was also fortunate to serve as an intern, at my Church, during a summer in college. Currently, I am passionate about Compassion International and Voice of the Martyrs, each organization representing the values of Christ in a caring and compassionate way.

I believe that Jesus Christ in the Son of God and that only by accepting Him as your personal Lord and Savior can you be saved. The Gospel, instead of being a bunch of rules and regulations is freeing and leads to true life. Jesus tells us that He is “the way, the truth and the light” and I have found that by walking with Him there is peace and joy and freedom.

As a Colorado Christian lawyer, I am able to relate with my clients and to share in their struggles, fears and hopes. Also, as a Christian lawyer I know that God wants me to work hard for those I represent and to do so in a way that is caring and compassionate to everyone involved. To me, ﬁghting hard for a client is fundamental to the practice of law. Every client deserves a lawyer who will listen to them, care about them, hope and pray for them, and who will work to ﬁnd the best solution to their problem.

I believe that as a Christian lawyer I can better relate to my clients. As a Christian, I know that it is by Christ alone that I am redeemed. As a Christian lawyer, I know that the system so often treats people as if they don!t exist. To me, one of the tragedies of the criminal justice system is its inability to see people as something other than a case. It is my goal, as Christian attorney, to get the Court or the DA or the Police or a jury to see my client as more than a number or a case, and to help them see that my client is a real person.

The practice of law is demanding. I ﬁnd great joy as a Denver area Christian attorney in helping my clients and their families in their time of need. It is my hope and prayer that in my practice, as well as in my life, that Christ be glorified.

In Colorado there exists a wonderful chapter of the Christian Legal Society. The attorney in the Christian Legal Society offer me the ability to have other professional contacts who share the faith. It also serves as a great network of attorneys for referrals when clients have needs outside of criminal law.

Professionally, I have worked as a State Prosecutor and Public Defender as well as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. In private practice I practice criminal defense in Colorado, throughout the state, in all types of courts -including Federal. In addition to my work experience, I am a Commissioner for the Missouri State Public Defender System and a former member of the Missouri Advisory Sentencing Commission. I have also presented Continuing Legal Education seminars on various topics, from cross examination to domestic violence.
