My
practice is focused on representing individuals facing criminal charges
in Federal, State and municipal court in Colorado. I have practiced
criminal law for over 12 years, and in law school I interned with the
Missouri State Public Defenders. After graduating, I worked for Legal
Aid, the Missouri State Public Defenders, a State Prosecuting Attorney's
Office and the United States Attorney. I
have handled thousands of criminal cases and have seen the criminal
process from the Prosecution and Defense side of the aisle. Let me put
my experience and training to work for you.
I
started my own firm to help people. I am proud of my role in the
criminal justice system. Everyone - Everyone deserves to be defended
against the charges brought by the government. Everyone deserves a
lawyer who will listen to them and believe them and help them. I will
walk with you in the process. Together, we will fight your case.
I also engage in compliance and
regulatory law, including advising clients on the Foreign Corrupt
Practices Act (FCPA), as well as Stark and Anti- Kickback matters and
False Claims Act (FCA) claims. At Miller Leonard, PC, we believe your
freedom is important and you deserve an attorney who will believe in
you, work with you, fight for you, and who will devote themselves to
your case.
I have over 12 years as a practicing attorney. My background in criminal law is extensive including stints as a former State Public Defender, State Prosecuting Attorney, and a former Special Assistant United States Attorney. As a Public Defender and Prosecutor I handled a wide variety of cases, including murder, serious violent crimes, sex crimes, white collar crimes, and cyber crimes.
When I elected to enter private practice, I continued practicing criminal defense, but also expanded my practice to include civil matters such as compliance training and education, internal investigation and complex business litigation. My training and experience as a former government attorney, both as a prosecutor and defender, allow me to have a perspective into how governmental investigations are conducted.
I have been appointed, numerous times, to serve as a Special Prosecutor on select criminal matters. I was also appointed as Special Counsel for a regulatory agency to investigate a large, multi-state fraudulent scheme that involved hundreds of millions of dollars in lost money and thousands of defrauded individuals.
Professionally
I have sought excellence in my practice. I have taught my fellow
attorneys classes in Continuing Legal Education on matters such as Cross
Examination, The Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions, as
well as Domestic Violence and Protective Orders. I am a current member
of the Missouri State Public Defender Commission and a former member of
the Missouri Advisory Sentencing Commission. I have also written
legislation related to driving while intoxicated offenses and internet
crimes and testified before state House and Senate Committees.
Currently, I handle State Criminal Defense as well as Federal Criminal Defense and municipal criminal defense matters in Denver, and all of Colorado. For select clients, I handle Federal cases nationwide, with appropriate co-counsel to comply with local District rules on attorney admittance. My criminal defense practice is broad, and it encompasses representation of individuals and businesses under investigation, as well as individuals and businesses in need of trial court and appellate court representation.
Outside of my traditional criminal defense practice, I work with clients who have compliance related issues, internal investigations and businesses and individuals facing regulatory scrutiny. Much of my compliance counseling involves matters that have the potential to trip criminal sanctions, such as the FCPA, Stark and Anti- Kickback matters, as well as revising business ethics manuals to include information concerning the United State’s Sentencing Guidelines.
